Several years ago, the City of Lordsburg extended an
invitation to the Mexican city of Janos to become Sister Cities, an idea
which was quickly embraced not only by the two cities mentioned, but by
all of Hidalgo County.
Since that time, a Sister City Celebration is held each
September where the two communities come together to celebrate their
differences and their similarities. The Celebration is held at the
United States/Mexico border at Antelope Wells in southern Hidalgo
County. Over 2000 people gather from both sides of the border to
celebrate the official mutual trade agreement between Lordsburg/Hidalgo
County and Municipio de Janos, San Felipe de Santiago de Janos, State of
Chihuahua, and Republic of Mexico.
Celebration festivities include recognition of
dignitaries, mariachi music, border horse racing, folk dancing and tons
of authentic Mexican food.
